This is (as far as I can tell) the only place to get middle eastern food in the area -- and it's pretty good! The middle eastern menu features lunch counter staples such as falafel sandwiches, gyros, hummus, baba ganoush, and tabouli. The falafel is moist and flavorful, and the sandwich is made with delicious pickled beets and... french fries (??) -- actually, the end result is pretty tasty. The hummus is a bit tangy -- fine, if you like it that way -- and the thin pita that comes with with is nice and fresh. All in all, a great spread for a full mediterranean / mideastern lunch. They also do pizza, which I haven't tried but hear is good. And the ice cream servings -- the place is a malt shop and ice cream parlor, after all -- are HUGE.

As a CMU alumni from the 90's I was excited to return to campus today. I was discouraged by the reviews posted on this site about the malt shop, so I decided to see for myself. As of today March 1,2015 the malt shop is back to what we remember as students. Pizza, subs, ice cream, salads are all apart of the current menu. The manager was very kind and explained the change over from previous owners. The malt shop has cool CMU memorabilia. So go back to the old times and grab a slice of pizza and salad like the old days.

The Malt Shop has been a CMU favorite for 20-30 years. We went there almost daily while in school for pizza and gyros. I just came back for a visit and stopped by for the best pizza in town, and found out they sold it. Not only is all of the delicious Mediterranean food gone, but the pizza was flat (not thin and crispy, just flat) and the cheese was not the same. I know when you buy a new business you want to make it your own, but don't mess with a successful menu, especially their famous pizza! I want this place to be around for another 20-30 years.

The malts and shakes are great here (my father loves this place), but it seems odd paired with the middle eastern menu. The Malt Shop also used to have a strict policy on cash only, which doesn't go we'll with their pricy menu. Overall, it's a great place to stop into to grab a milkshake, but I wouldn't recommend eating in.

The falafel sandwich is really very good: big, with turnip pickles done the right way, garlic sauce, nicely browned falafel. But you'll have to wait for it. Service here is glacially slow and indifferent, and they seem to try to steer patrons toward the easy stuff: pizza sweating under a heat-lamp, or maybe a nice milk-shake? After three visits, each for what was supposed to be a quick lunch but ended up a frustrating, increasingly hungry ordeal, I switched to the Pita Pit. Heresy, I know, but at least you get fed.

Customer service is awesome, but the place seems old and run down (not in a pleasant way). Great as a high school hang out, but for anyone else, I'd recommend something else.
